The owners of this apartment in Mumbai’s Worli neighbourhood approached us with a unique brief. They wanted to convert their sprawling three bedroom home with an absolute view of the ocean into a 1.5 bedroom, opening up the space entirely. While it’s not every day that a client wants to sacrifice prime real estate, the reason behind this undertaking was that the house has only two occupants.

Located on the top floor of a building, there is a panoramic view of the ocean from practically every side. We convinced the owners to slightly downsize their existing, extremely spacious living room, allowing for a larger terrace out front, with large glass sliding doors opening onto an outdoor seating area. As an older structure, permission was fortunately granted to alter the exterior façade and replace all non-loadbearing walls with floor-to-ceiling windows, featuring both fixed glass and smaller operable panels for ventilation and maintenance access. As a result, a wealth of natural light filters into the apartment.

From the front door, one enters the living room featuring an embroidered wooden panel at the far end; to the left is the dining area, alongside an open all-white kitchen. The apartment features light grey walls and wooden flooring throughout, giving it a seamless feel. Modernist furniture pieces add a pop of bright colour against the neutral surrounding and both the indoor and outdoor areas are replete with plants.

The master bedroom possesses a picturesque corner glass window and a large his-and-hers walk-in wardrobe. Above the master bed, a high headboard covers the length of the wall all the way to the ceiling, clad in embroidered grey raffia panels. The bathroom is probably larger than the average Mumbai bedroom, with a bathtub, jacuzzi and glass-panelled shower overlooking the ocean.

Adjoining the bedroom is a private den, accessed through a wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling door, made from marble sheets and wood. Black and white panels created in a 6mm thickness allow for light to filter through the marble and when left open, this door allows for the den to become an extension of the bedroom.

A smaller guest room, intended for the occasional visitor, occupies the rear of the apartment. Despite its modest size, it also features a sea view.
